Battlestar Galactica Challenge, Day 10: Your favourite speech

When Galen Tyrol was the president of the workers’ union, he gave the famous Mario Savio “Bodies upon the gears” speech. That was pretty exciting.

I also like the short little speech Saul Tigh gives when he finds out he’s a cylon:

“My name is Saul Tigh. I am an officer in the Colonial Fleet. Whatever else I am, whatever else it means, that’s the man I want to be. And if I die today, that’s the man I’ll be.”

Battlestar Galactica Challenge, Day 8: Your favourite ship

Are we talking about a ship in the fleet? Or the Tumblr kind of “ship”?

My favourite Tumblr ship is Lee and Kara, because of course it is.

BUT! My favourite ship in the Colonial Fleet is probably Cloud 9 because of the grass and the artificial sunlight that the richer survivors of the human race get to enjoy. Most of the time, whenever they’re down on a planet, something is vaguely different about the light (scenes shot on “Caprica” post-nuclear-attack have a yellowish filter, scenes shot on “Kobol” have a slightly blue hue, everything is almost blindingly white on “New Caprica,” etc…) but the very few scenes that take place on Cloud 9 have such natural-looking light. It’s really nice to think about all the time and dedication that must have gone into making that kind of artificial sky and sunlight.

Plus, a really cute water-fight between Kara and Lee happens on that ship, and I love them. And Ellen gets drunk on appletinis and hits on Zarek. And it’s a good ol’ time except for the guns and bombs and assholes who show up later in the episode.

Battlestar Galactica Challenge, Day 6: Your least favourite character

Okay. I really don’t like Cally Henderson Tyrol. Yeah, she’s really adorable and everything, but she’s also really impulsive in a stupid way (Kara could be called impulsive too, maybe, but I get the feeling she knows what she’s doing a lot more than Cally does).

I guess I also have a few problems with her actress’s line delivery. Sometimes it sounds kind of stilted.

And okay, I GET THAT GALEN TYROL DIDN’T MEAN TO BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF HER that one time, and I get the whole thing where she understood and immediately forgave him because she knew him better than to think he would do that naturally. But come on. A few episodes later we see that she went and married him on New Caprica. I feel like that might have needed some more explanation. And even if I were Cally and I trusted Galen that much, you can bet I’d be a bit more wary of him than usual for a while. But basically we saw this watching the show: Galen has bad dream and hospitalizes Cally > Cally immediately forgives Galen > BAM! Married. I dunno, man. That just didn’t sit well with me, as much as I love Galen. Cally just seems kind of weak, like I think maybe she has some internalized misogyny going on and feels like she doesn’t deserve to look for someone who maybe DIDN’T accidentally beat her within an inch of her life, hey?

Plus, she shot Boomer. Maybe Boomer wouldn’t have ever been re-brainwashed by the base star cylons if she hadn’t died and been resurrected there.

And then, of course, there’s some stuff that happens with Cally in the next season…which I can’t talk about because my boyfriend will read this and I can’t spoil it for him! WE’RE GETTING THERE.

But hey. She’s super cute. I mean look at that face. Look at those bangs. Total cutie pie. Wow, typing “cutie pie” made me feel like someone’s creepy grandpa.

Battlestar Galactica Challenge, Day 2: Your favourite male character

I really want to say Saul Tigh because I know it’ll piss a lot of people off. Seriously, he made a few bad calls and he has a temper and he married an annoying woman and he’s an alcoholic but WHY does everyone hate him so much? I especially love him after he loses his eye and plays a key role in the insurgency on New Caprica because he gets more grizzled and his voice gets raspier and he wears that hat like he’s some kind of steampunk sailor from the future-past. Or at least from a trendy indie rock band like Bon Iver or Grandaddy. Whatever.

Okay, I’ll pick Karl Agathon, “Helo.” He’s not particularly interesting to watch, at least not as interesting as maybe Gaius Baltar or Galen Tyrol - or even Felix Gaeta - BUT. The reason I like Helo is because he may as well be a living GI Joe, with that square jaw and general giant-ness, but he’s the most sensitive dude on the whole damn show, ladies included. He loves his cylon babymomma, and he’s not afraid to fight his friends off when they give him shit for being in love with her. He’s definitely the sap in their relationship, but he’s still a soldier and can clear his head when he’s needed for important tasks - say, when the CIC is missing one Saul Tigh and needs a replacement Executive Officer. I also get the feeling that he’d be a nerd deep down, and that in his time back on Caprica, he often turned down rugby tournaments with his friends to play with science fiction action figures, or sing “Wedding Bell Blues” loudly into a hairbrush, dancing on the coffee table when his parents weren’t home.
